In her latest blog, Sheila says the findings of the Youth Voice Census 2026 should be a wake-up call for all of us who are committed to improving the lives and prospects of young people.

What stands out in this year’s Youth Voice Census is not a lack of ambition. Young people continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience, determination and optimism about their future. They want to learn, develop skills, gain experience and secure meaningful employment. Yet too many are telling us that the path from education into work is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.

motivation alone is not enough if opportunity is not available

The report highlights growing concerns about financial pressures, wellbeing and access to opportunity. It is particularly concerning that many young people feel that a lack of work experience, limited local opportunities and barriers beyond their control are preventing them from achieving their aspirations. The message is clear: motivation alone is not enough if opportunity is not available.

At Career Connect, these findings resonate strongly with what the young people we support tell us every day. Through our work across schools, colleges, local authorities and communities, we see talented young people who are ready to succeed but who often need additional guidance, encouragement and practical opportunities to help them take the next step.

The Census reinforces the importance of high-quality careers guidance, meaningful work experience, targeted support for those facing disadvantage and stronger partnerships between education providers, employers and community organisations. We must ensure that every young person, regardless of background or postcode, can access the information, networks and opportunities that enable them to thrive.

All have a role to play

This is not a challenge for young people to solve on their own. Employers, policymakers, educators and support organisations all have a role to play. Young people are telling us what they need. Our responsibility is to listen and respond.

At Career Connect, we remain committed to championing social mobility and ensuring that young people have the confidence, skills and opportunities to shape their own futures. The Youth Voice Census provides valuable insight into both the challenges and the potential of this generation. While the findings are sobering, they should also give us hope. Young people have not lost their ambition. Our task is to remove the barriers that stand in their way.

Now is the time to turn listening into action.
